Employment Support Allowance Contact Number

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is a benefit that offers financial support. This support is for those of whom are unable to work due to a disability, illness or require personal assistance in order to work. Those who are currently unemployed, self-employed, and employed may apply. To get further information, the Employment Support Allowance contact number is 0800 169 0310 or 0800 023 4888. These contact numbers are primarily for those who are applying for the contribution-based and income-related ESA. Typically, for first-time applicants, ESA recommends contacting your local Jobcentre Plus office to begin the application process. For those who need to find your local office, you may search using your postcode.

There are three types of ESA benefits, “new-style,” contribution-based, and income-based.

New-style ESA are for those who have an illness or disability that affects your ability to work. It is also required that you have been employed or self-employed and have contributed to National Insurance, normally within the past two to three years. Additionally, National Insurance Credits can also count towards this eligibility requirement.

Contribution-based ESA are for applicants that have an illness or disability that affects your ability to work. In addition, applicants either receive the severe disability premium or recently have been approved for the severe disability premium within the past month and still are eligible to receive it. Similar to the new-style ESA, applicants must also have been employed or self-employed and have contributed to National Insurance, normally within the past two to three years. National Insurance Credits also counts.

For income-based ESA, applicants must meet all the above requirements with an exception. Your National Insurance contributions in the last 2 to 3 years do not affect your eligibility.

In addition to the minimum eligibility criteria, ESA further explains other eligibility requirements on their website. It says applicants may be eligible if you are under State Pension age, you are not receiving Statutory Sick Pay or Maternity Pay and have not gone back to work and are not receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance. It further describes that employed, self-employed, unemployed, and students are eligible to apply.

If you are an eligible beneficiary, ESA will provide you financial and work-related support. An assessment rate will be made once the claim has been approved. It will also include benefit caps and work-related support. New-style and contribution-based ESA has a limit duration of 365 days but requires participation in the work-related activity group. If you are in the support group or receive income-based ESA, there is no limit duration.

ESA benefits can be reduced if you do not attend interviews or do not do work-related activity. A beneficiary will receive a “sanction letter” if the above requirements are not met.
